The family
Kaoko Mopane is owned and run by our family, your hosts Gerrit and Jana.
Our family fell in love with Mopane Camp many years ago. Since our first venture in Opuwo some 15 years ago, we have become business owners and true locals of Kaokoland, and when the chance finally came to make our dream come true, we jumped at it.
Out here it is quiet. Wild grass, mopane trees, mountains in the distance, birds calling all day and the wind in the leaves. This is where we rest, and we hope you will too.
Self sustainability
Our dream was to turn Kaoko Mopane into a self-sustainable establishment, growing our own fruit and vegetables, with plenty of chickens to supply free-range eggs for breakfast. The lodge is built from locally sourced recycled material and runs entirely on solar power, and a greenhouse with more than a thousand seedlings supplies the restaurant.
The lodge is not self-sustainable because it is cool and hip. The traditional people of Kaokoland, the Himba, have lived their traditional lives for generations without the gadgets and assistance we have today. It is to them that we look for inspiration when it comes to being self-sustainable, but it is also the Himba people that we need to support, and it is here that we need your help.
Community
By staying at Kaoko Mopane Lodge & Campsite, you contribute a small fee that we call the conservancy fee. It helps Himba families earn a living.
